Anaerobic Digester

EDI, a family-owned and operated company, has been On the road to Zero Waste since its founding in 1967. The EDI Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Facility is just one of many examples of this focused effort to create sustainable solutions for our environment.

In 2021, EDI opened the first AD facility in the region designed to meet and exceed the ambitious goals of SB 1383 and achieve a 75% methane reduction by 2025. Anaerobic digestion is an efficient and environmentally sustainable technology that can significantly contribute to the management of organic waste in California. Reducing the amount of methane released into the atmosphere is critical for ensuring a safe and healthy environment for ourselves and future generations.

EDI’s AD Facility provides a sustainable end-market for organic waste in Southern California while simultaneously producing organic fertilizer and the cleanest fuel available in the state: Renewable Natural Gas (RNG). RNG is by far the most environmentally friendly fuel in the world and plays an increasingly vital role in California’s clean energy future.

To further divert waste from landfills, EDI is excited to announce the expansion of this facility. The expansion will include the installation of two new digesters, resulting in the diversion of 775,000 tons of additional food and green material from landfills, along with a reduction of over 300,000 MTCO2e of greenhouse gas emissions over the next ten years.

EDI’s AD Facility is a foundational element for municipalities to achieve state mandates, including AB 1826, AB 1594, and SB 1383, which relate directly to organic recycling in California.

This significant investment is anticipated to be completed in 2026. Please take a look at the images below to follow the construction progress.
